Michael has gained international recognition - being awarded Master Circle status by the International Association of Pastel Societies in June of 2019, awarded Signature Member status by the Pastel Society of America in March 2019, and has received numerous awards in New Zealand and Internationally from recognised pastel/art competitions.
Michael has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Illinois, USA and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Elam School of Fine Arts Auckland, New Zealand. After a long and successful design career, more recently Michael decided to become a full-time artist and has been running workshops with his wife Julie both here in New Zealand and also internationally. In 2019 Michael and Julie ran a1l day workshop at the IAPS Thirteenth Biennial Convention, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA and were invited to be Guest International Tutors at the Australian Pastel Expo 2020.
The two mediums that Michael enjoys painting in most are pastel and acrylic, as they both suit his photo-realistic style and love of detail. Most recently Michael has been focusing on a still life series of paintings featuring New Zealand’s iconic BuzzyBee toy and associated Kiwiana.
