Gavin Chai APANZ
www.gavinchai.com
Quiet and reserved Auckland based artist Gavin Chai prefers to shed light on reality with colours rather than with words. As a realist artist, Gavin is interested in revitalizing the historical drawing and painting techniques to represent contemporary experiences, using colour as a form of language to convey his vision where words cannot enunciate.
He likes to push the boundaries of colours by means of transcendence, where certain areas of painting will be coloured more vividly and entrancingly like glow on a diamond, or a patch of green in the desert. He believes that it is only in the position of privation that we will learn to appreciate the beauty of ordinary things, such as seeing a patch of green from the position of a dry desert, or the feeling of home when we are lost; and such proposition informs Gavin as a colourist. Although Gavin is mainly an oil painter, he loves pastels simply for its colours and unique handling qualities.
Gavin has completed the Certificate in Applied Technology (Carpentry) at Unitec in 2016, and the Bachelor of Visual Arts at AUT in 2020.
He is currently a full-time artist.
